Check out this freshly washed Space Gray 135i with blackout kidneys and shadowline trim. I’m looking into leasing a new 135i with Space Gray + Coral Red Leather + M Sport Package after I turn in my A4 Quattro S-Line. I think the aftermarket options for the 135i are too good to pass up, even though the twin scroll turbocharger will likely not offer as much tuning potential as the N54 twin-turbo setup. Maybe I can find a used twin-turbo 135i in Sparkling Graphite– but what about the HPFP issues? Argh!

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 11, 2010… BMW’s EfficientDynamics philosophy continues with the 2011 135i Coupe and Convertible models which feature the company’s latest twin-scroll turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six cylinder engine. Both models will feature the 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT) as an option.

The new six-cylinder (N55 designation) develops maximum output of 300 hp at 5,800 rpm, with peak torque of 300 lb-ft available all the way from 1,200–5,000 rpm. This is the same level of performance as the current 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder but with the innovation of twin-scroll technology and the integration of VALVETRONIC throttle-less intake technology, this new engine promises even better throttle response and even more fuel efficiency. Thanks to VALVETRONIC, VANOS, and the twin-scroll turbocharger housing, peak torque is reached 100rpm earlier than with the previous engine, and engine boost response is improved across the entire engine speed range.

In order to enhance the sporting character of the optional 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission, the shift paddles now feature dedicated paddles for upshifting and down shifting. The driver now pulls the right paddle for upshifts and the left for down shifts. Manual shifts may also be accomplished via the console mounted e-shifter.

Harman Kardon Surround Sound System replaces HiFi System Professional as the upgrade sound system option.

The 2011 BMW 135i Coupe and Convertible will go on sale in the United States as 2011 models in Spring 2010.

BMW chief Norbert Reithofer has confirmed to CAR Online that a range of tii performance options will be launched soon on the company’s smaller models. He has finally ruled out a rumoured M1 version of the 1-series and said the tii spec would be the most performance-oriented model, claiming the the twin-turbo 135i was quite fast enough (it does 0-62mph in 5.3sec, after all).

The tii concept shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show points accurately to the approach BMW is developing: performance kits for the 1-series coupe and hatchback, an aero package, carbonfibre details, fatter wheels and tyres, sports seats and instruments. There’s even talk of a new M-style steering wheel with integrated LED rev counter.

A tii for the masses

BMW is the past master at offering huge choice in spec and trim; subtle nuance of alloy wheel size here, and Sport spec there is the stuff of workplace car park folklore. The tii spec will slot above today’s M sport spec in the multi-faceted pecking order.

However, BMW plans for the tii models to be proper performance cars in the longer run. For instance, the next-gen 1-series, dubbed F20 and due in late 2011, will offer a tii version with a downsized twin-turbo four-cylinder petrol engine and a radically lighter body and chassis, we hear.

The 3-series tii

We’ll see the facelifted 3-series this summer – with mild revisions to the lights and bonnet – but there is likely to be a tii model, too. Expect the brakes from the M3, 19in wheels, sports suspension and a new twin-clutch transmission. Again, though, a harder core tii is likely with the next 3-series, codenamed F30 and due in late 2011.

Q&A with Norbert Reithofer

CAR: In Tokyo, BMW showed a vision for a 1-series coupe with tii genes. Fact or fiction?
Reithofer: ‘The response was positive. Expect to see tailormade tii packages in the very near future.’

Q: But the original tii was much more than a cosmetic equipment package…
A: ‘True. On the other hand, the 135i already plays kind of a tii role within the 1series.’

Q: What about an even stronger M1 as new top-of-the-line version?
A: ‘ItÂ´s not in the plan.’

Q: The tii approach epitomises core brand values for BMW. Are your smallest models most likely to get the tii treatment first?
A: ‘In terms of sportiness and vehicles dynamics, both the 1- and the 3-series are already well positioned.’

Q: Isn’t the danger that the tii suffix could be seen as just decorative? CAR thinks there should be substance to back up the badge…
A: ‘I donÂ´t disagree. But we need a bit more time – to define the evolution of the tii theme and to physically develop it.’

“So, how does it go?

Well, let me tell you, I haven’t yet driven an EVO or 335 or some kind of really fast car, I was once passenger in EVO8.

But this thing goes. You have to know, we were only ably to push it to around 3500 rpm, beacuse of break in period.
But, it just flys. 5th gear, uphill, and passing a car? bah, just tap the gas a bit.
It is so revy, so responsible. Down shifts with bliping are just one big smile.
The sound gets ”fatter” at around 2500rpm. It really thunders if it is slowly moving,revving a bit and you are hearing it from outside.

Steering?
Just think where you want to go, and this car will turn in by his self.
Put a pedal down in the middle of corner and you will feel how the rear end helps to turn in.
Floor it in the middle of 180-turn in 2nd gear and you will found out that it is tail happy.(Mind you, we we’re not pushing it hard at all)

Suspension?
Our previous car was Audi A3 Sportback with S-Line package and susp.
That thing was rock solid, you could feel every little stone on the asphalt, but 135i is softer, BUT it drives better. This susp is so worked out, I still can’t believe it. It is comfortable and hard at the same time. They must have spent a lot of time on it.

Suma sumarum: go out, bang all you saving pigs, beg your mamma for money, sell one kidney(you got 2, right), work over-time, sell your kids.

This car is THAT good.”
